Some facts about Quetzaltenango:

Quetzaltenango is also known as Xela (Shay-la), meaning "beneath 10 gods." The ten gods referred to in the name are the 10 volcanoes that surround this area of Guatemala. Out of the 10 volcanoes, 3 are active.


Temperatures year round average 70-80 degrees F during the daytime and 45 degrees F at night.


There are two main seasons in Quetzaltenango: the rainy season, which is from May through November, and the dry season, which is from December to May. During the rainy season it rains every single day, and in the dry season you won't see a single drop of rain in months.


In Quetzaltenango, half of the population is illiterate.


The language spoken there is Spanish, but there are 22 different Mayan dialects in Guatemala.


There is one local Wal Mart in the area.
